US dairy farmers are in crisis due to a vicious cycle of “boom and bust” prices coupled with milk oversupply, leading to increasing consolidation within the industry. Since 1997 the US has lost more than 70% of its dairy farms. There are now only 24,000 dairy farms left in the US.
Dairy farmers cannot wait any longer for change! Dairy farmers need policies that include measures to balance milk supply and demand, stabilizing the market while ensuring that farmers are paid a fair, living wage for their product. The Milk from Family Dairies Act (S. 4906) can achieve these goals! The Milk from Family Dairies Act would ensure dairy farmers a fair price for their product while protecting costs for consumers and revitalizing rural areas – all while saving taxpayers money.
