On May 13, 2025, the House Committee on Agriculture released their proposed budget reconciliation text that includes nearly $300b in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides food assistance to more than 42 million people nationwide.
NFFC strongly opposes these cuts – read our statement below:
“Draconian cuts to SNAP used to pay for tax cuts for millionaires and corporations, as well as increased funding for programs that only benefit the very wealthiest farmers on the largest farms, lock in an unsustainable food system that threatens small farmers and working families alike. Beyond inexcusably manufacturing more food insecurity, cuts to SNAP will disproportionately harm rural communities and independent farmers, many of whom generate revenue from SNAP participants who choose to spend their money on locally-grown food. The National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC) has long advocated for strengthening public institutions that support economic empowerment for farmers and oppose corporate domination over the food and farm system. The provisions of this bill are antithetical to these goals and threaten the chances of a full, five-year, bipartisan Farm Bill that improves people’s lives, protects the human right to food, and ensures fair prices for farmers.”
