Through our membership in Campaign for Contract Agriculture Reform (CCAR), we have been defending the Packers and Stockyards Act (PSA) and advocating for long-overdue fair implementation rules. Unfortunately, those rules are under threat by opponents of competitive agricultural markets who are seeking to roll back the work USDA has already completed, prevent USDA from making additional progress on these rules, and prevent any similar effort in the future. These harmful provisions were included in a rider in the FY2024 Agriculture, Rural Development, and Food and Drug Administration Appropriations bill in the House. The policy rider would not only halt implementation and finalization of the completed rules, but would also endanger the most essential aspects of the work to strengthen the P&S Act. NFFC and many allies from across the US sent this letter to the leaders of both the House and Senate Appropriations Committees – read the full copy here.
