NFFC is building support for a growing international food sovereignty movement. This movement seeks to guarantee the basic right of communities to choose where and how their food is produced and what food they consume. Fighting against corporate control of agriculture, family farmers and fishermen are leading the way to change the food system.

Food for Thought and Action: A Food Sovereignty Curriculum
Our global food system is terribly broken. Together, we can fix it!
The curriculum is divided into four modules: one each for consumers, faith and anti-hunger groups, environmentalists and farmers. This collection of education-for-action exercises and factsheets has been developed by Grassroots International and the National Family Farm Coalition to help build the food sovereignty movement in the United States.

The NFFC defends food sovereignty and the human rights of famers across the globe by:
1) channeling its voice and support for the rights of farmers across the globe as a member of Via Campesina, an international movement of peasants, small- and medium-sized producers, landless, rural women, indigenous people, rural youth and agricultural workers. Via Campesina defends the values and the basic interests of our members and is an autonomous, pluralist and multicultural movement, independent of any political, economic, or other type of affiliation.
2) taking an active stance to reform our broken food and farm systems. NFFC proposed the Food From Family Farms Act as an alternative model to the U.S. Farm Bill:
* We encourage you to read the NFFC’s Food From Family Farms Act. Decades of farm and trade policy that allows commodity prices to fall below cost of production has devastated the fabric of family farm agriculture and rural communities in the U.S. and around the world. As a result, U.S. Farm Policy has led to the current global food crisis. However it is unlikely that the public around the world will be able to rebuild a sustainable family farm agriculture system or a healthful, safe food supply without appropriate U.S. public policy that overhauls our current Farm Bill from a subsidy-based system to one based on price supports and supply management.
3) speaking up about the global food crisis. This crisis, only now in the international spotlight, has been taking place for decades and is caused in large part by flawed free trade agreements and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Working with other fair trade, international development, and advocacy groups, environmentalists, and faith-based organizations, NFFC helped craft a policy platform on how to build a path towards sovereignty for all farmers around the world.
