Camden, New Jersey (September
30, 2006) - As Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young, and Dave
Matthews perform at Farm Aid 2006 in Camden, New Jersey, George Naylor
sings a tune that is pleasant to family farmers' ears as he announces
the National Family Farm Coalition's Farm Bill Policy Statement.
"If we are to make sustainable family farms the norm and not the exception in this country, we need public policy to make sure we reverse the advance of industrial food production, processing, and marketing. We all have an opportunity and responsibility to get involved in passing a new farm bill that acts as a consumer-farmer economic bill of rights," stated Naylor. Holding up a one-pound bag of corn and explaining that 56 of those bags equal a bushel, Naylor illustrated the need for a fair farm price. In one hand he held the $2.10 he was paid and in the other the $2.83 it cost him to plant, grow, and harvest that bushel of corn. Naylor then lifted up a gallon of milk and demonstrated that it took approximately $2.08 to produce that gallon while the farmer got paid at most $1.04, which means dairy farmers lose a $1.00 for every gallon they produce. Naylor questioned: "How is this sustainable? The solution to this backward system: the National Family Farm Coalition's Farm Bill Policy Statement. With a price support system that charges a fair price to the corporate buyers of commodities, we can eliminate most farm subsidy payments that actually finance the elimination of family farms." NFFC's farm bill policy statement includes establishment of food security reserves, commodity price floors, fair wages and working conditions for all workers in the food system. It supports diversified, sustainable family farmers through a democratic policy making process that protects the future of our environment and encourages healthy rural communities. Developed by family farmers across the nation, this policy statement succinctly states the role American government should take in ensuring a safe and affordable healthy food supply.
